Did you know . . .

• Bees have been pollinating flowers for 10-20 million years.

• Honey bees are responsible for pollinating crops worth $9.7 billion each year in the United States.

• Just in the state of Ohio, bees pollinate fruits and vegetable crops worth $86 million.

• The honey bees from one hive can pollinate up to 225,000 flowers a day.

• Each honey bee makes only 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime. She will work herself to death in as little as 45 days.

• To make one pound of honey, bees fly over 55,000 miles and visit two million flowers.

• Bees consume about 17-20 pounds of honey to produce one pound of beeswax.

• A honey bee colony consists of 40,000 to 60,000 bees at its peak.

• A queen bee will lay 1000-1500 eggs per day.

• The number of bee colonies in Ohio have dropped from 115,000 in 1965 to close to 15,000 in 2007.

• Ohio lost 70 percent of its colonies during the winter of 2009-2010.
